Grants for Charities
A charity can approach a foundation and request a grant to help them carry out their work or achieve a project goal and help them give back to their local community. This gives vital help and support to those who are in need of it. Most importantly, a grant is deemed as a gift that does not need to be repaid. As with most things where you are requesting money, you will need to find out if your charity is eligible and fulfils certain criteria before applying for a grant.
Every Issue we will highlight a different entity that offers charity grants.
This month’s Grab a Grant website is the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation
One of the largest independent foundations in the UK, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation’s approach has been to back excellent organisations and support their goals across five different sectors: Environment, Food, Children and Young People, Arts, Social Change.
Their grant process is collaborative and flexible, aiming to help projects that show creativity and potential for positive change. Grant recipients not only get financial support but also benefit from the foundation’s expertise. Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is committed to long-term sustainability and supporting initiatives that address societal challenges, making them an important player in philanthropy.

Every issue we select a Charity to feature in our newsletter. Today our chosen charity is Kidney Research UK, the leading kidney research charity in the UK, focused on funding research into the prevention, treatment and management of kidney disease.
Their vision is the day when everyone lives free from kidney disease and for more than 60 years the research they fund has been making an impact. But, kidney disease is increasing as are the factors contributing to it, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity, making their work more essential than ever.
At Kidney Research UK they work with clinicians and scientists across the UK, funding and facilitating research into all areas of kidney disease. They collaborate with partners across the public, private and third sectors to prevent kidney disease and drive innovation to transform treatments.
Over the last ten years they have invested more than £58 million into research. They lobby governments and decision makers to change policy and practice to ensure that more than 7.2 million people living with kidney disease in the UK have access to the most effective care and treatment and to make kidney disease a priority.
Most importantly, they also work closely with patients, ensuring their voice is heard and is at the centre of everything they do, from deciding which research to invest in to how they plan their priorities and their work across the charity.
Their research, fundraising, policy, community and awareness projects take place up and down the country. With headquarters in Peterborough they’re also excited to be driving new initiatives locally which have the potential to benefit patients across the UK. If you would like to work with them to help drive this impact, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Fundraising Tip from Kidney Research UK:
Ensure your audience and your organisational priorities are aligned. Whether you are writing an application to a trust, designing a social media fundraising campaign, designing a community event, or pitching for a big corporate partnership, use all the data and knowledge you can gather to ensure your proposition chimes with who you are trying to reach and stay true to your charity’s values and goals.

As well as highlighting a different charity in every issue, we are also including the report of an inspirational charity member or charity supporter, in our “Reach to Achieve” segment.
This edition features Angela Hougham, a lady who undertook a solo charity walk around Britain to raise £1,000,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Angela’s Journey: Walking the Walk
Angela’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and compassion. Despite never being a fan of walking, she embarked on a profound challenge to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, a cause close to her heart. Witnessing the impact of dementia on people she has known for over 30 years, Angela felt a deep emotional connection to the issue. The pain of seeing individuals and their families grappling with this condition compelled her to take action.
Choosing to walk around the perimeter of Great Britain, Angela set an ambitious goal of covering approximately 2,500 miles over the course of a year, averaging 10 miles a day. Her route took her through villages, towns and cities, providing opportunities to connect with as many people as possible to raise awareness and funds. While navigating safe and populated areas, Angela encountered isolated spaces like farms and green lands, adapting her route to ensure both safety and efficiency.
In late October 2022, Angela accomplished her planned route, completing the remarkable journey that she had set out on. Having raised an impressive £68,482, Angela’s fundraising efforts didn’t end with the completion of her walk. Despite taking a well-deserved break to heal from the physical toll of her journey, she continues to raise funds with her justgiving account still open. The total funds raised have now surpassed £70,000, a testament to the generosity and support she has garnered from individuals touched by her dedication to the Alzheimer’s Society. Angela’s journey is a shining example of how one person’s commitment can make a significant impact on a cause that truly matters.
