Instagram For Charities & Non-Profits

With over 1.2 billion active users every month, Instagram is a platform you definitely want to include in your digital marketing mix.

Charities and non-profit organisations can use social media as a space where they can connect with their audience in many engaging ways.

From Instagram Stories to Lives and Reels, the platform does a great job in connecting organisations with users in real-time.

Hashtags are also popular on Instagram, making it easier for you to find your niche and reach an audience that cares for your cause.

Take a look at the various Instagram tools and features available to charities and non-profits to help them achieve their fundraising or recruitment goals faster.

  • Instagram Profile Donate Button

The Donate button on Instagram allows charities to raise money directly from their Instagram Business account.

Nonprofits willing to fundraise using Instagram will need to sign up for Facebook and Instagram Fundraising Tools.

Find out how to apply for Facebook and Instagram Fundraising Tools here.

The application process usually takes between two and three weeks. Upon approval, charities are required to link their Facebook and Instagram accounts and switch their Instagram to a business account. At this point, you’re ready to start receiving donations via Instagram.

  • Instagram Charity Fundraiser

Charity Fundraisers on Instagram are created by users with the aim to collect donations for charities of their choice.

In order to create one, the person needs to create an Instagram post first. When the fundraiser is live, it can then be added to the profile’s bio as well as shared on Stories and Reels.

Instagram fundraisers are live for 30 days but their duration can be cut or extended at any time.

  • Instagram Fundraiser in Reels

Charity Fundraisers on Instagram are created by users with the aim to collect donations for charities of their choice.

As mentioned above, you can create or add Charity Fundraisers to Reels as well. The process will vary slightly depending on whether you are using Android or iOs to create and post your Reel.

Similarly to standard post fundraisers, you can end, delete, extend or remove it from a post or your bio at any time.

  • Instagram Live with Donate Button

From the Instagram app, people can use Instagram Live to start a fundraiser for a charitable organisation of their choice.

This feature allows other donors to support a non-profit’s cause and make donations in real time. As well as raising funds, livestreams also create meaningful connections during a shared space of time and are great for engagement.

The charity selected by the user will receive 100% of the money raised.

  • Instagram Stories with Donation Sticker

Another way for charities and their supporters to generate donations is by including the Donation sticker to their Instagram Stories.

Stories only last for 24 hours but the user can extend the duration of the fundraising campaign and amplify its effect by adding it to their Stories Highlights on their Instagram profile.

Keep in mind that, in order for a charity to be eligible for this feature and collect donations, it will need to have signed up for Facebook and Instagram Fundraising Tools.

A step by step guide on how to use the Instagram Donation Sticker in Stories is available here.
